Tudno Street

Tudno Street was the first street built in the ‘modern’ Llandudno around the 1840s, from where Llandudno expanded under the guidance of Lord Mostyn to the grand Victorian resort which we have today.

Before this Llandudno was a small mining village with only a few hundred inhabitants. Both the town, and the street the pubs sits on, derive their names from the parish they belong to, that of ‘Saint Tudno’ (pronounced Tidno) Llan loosely translating as parish of. This in turn derives its name is the patron saint of Llandudno the founder of the original parish church in 6th century. Nothing remains of this original structure, but the todays 12th century church stands on the same site on the windswept northerly cliffs of the Great Orme headland.

The Snowdon Hotel was born

By 1860 number 12 Tudno Street had been converted into a public house under the care of the Davies family, who are believed to have been the first landlords. Later number 11 was purchased and incorporated into the present building. The small public bar was originally a lean-to at the end of the building.

Under our stewardship

Stange & Co. purchased the pub in 1997 in a rather tired state from a National brewer, following a rather chequered period as a leased pub. But with a a decent dose of TLC, the pub soon blossomed into a popular local, famed for it's real ale, appearing for many consecutive years in the Good Beer Guide.

It would be fair to say it was a little spit and sawdust at the time but with a little steering from the Paul Meredith, the landlord in the latter years, it soon became a very popular local boozer for the folk of Llandudno. People will fondly remember the pub for its cracking beers, lively buzzy atmosphere, red leather sofas, eclectic 80s music selection, colourful fairy lights but perhaps less so for its toilets.

Time for a change

As the pub grew in popularity and started to attract more visitors and locals through its doors then we knew it was time to give the old girl a proper overhaul and bring her up to scratch as a slightly smarter local boozer that the Snowdon is today.

With the addition of a small kitchen, moving the bar to the other end of the pub and creating some much smarter toilets down stairs, the Snowdon is now a slightly more upmarket back street boozer, still offering a cracking selection of local beers and world wines, but now with the addition of a delicious homemade menu of small plates and pub classics.

She's been on quite a journey since we took her on in 1997.
